Located just 5.7 miles from Whitby, The Old Guard House has undergone an extensive restoration and transformation into a luxurious 5-bedroom holiday home over the course of the last 18 months. The original building has been meticulously furnished in the style of the 1940s, featuring traditional wallpaper, vintage furniture, and captivating wall art showcasing WWII British propaganda and governmental advice. The west-facing upper balcony has also been carefully restored, offering guests a breathtaking view of the farmland and coastal bays that line this sensational coast.
An extension, designed to seamlessly blend with the original structure, has been added to maximize the property's prime location. This addition houses the kitchen/living area, thoughtfully crafted for optimal comfort and relaxation. Complete with a multifuel burner, a sizable TV, and sumptuously soft sofas, this space serves as the heart of the home, fondly referred to as the ‘mess room’. Nearly an entire wall of glass doors allows for stunning sea vistas and opens up to the private garden and patio, shielded by discreet hedging and fencing to ensure total privacy for guests.
The history of The Old Guard House is a fascinating narrative that adds layers of intrigue to the property. Originally developed in 1941 as an Army station tasked with detecting enemy ships approaching Britain by sea during WWII, it was later handed over to the control of the RAF in 1942, becoming RAF Goldsborough. Playing a crucial role in the defense against German forces, the site was equipped with the ‘Chain Home Low’ radar warning system. In 1951, an expansive underground bunker was added to complement The Old Guardhouse. Tragically, a severe fire in 1958 rendered the bunker unusable, and in 2004, another fire caused significant damage to the Guardhouse, leaving it roofless and abandoned until the commencement of restoration work in 2022.
With its rich history and contemporary comforts, The Old Guard House promises memorable experiences and fun-filled adventures for guests seeking a unique getaway. Whether soaking in the historical ambiance or enjoying the modern amenities and stunning coastal views, this meticulously restored holiday home offers a blend of past and present for a truly unforgettable stay.
