As a former rival to Gretna Green, this charming little town performed its fair share of illicit marriages. With a museum dedicated to its famous guards, a wide variety of shops and facilities for horse riding, golfing and fishing nearby, this historic settlement has something for everyone to do. The picturesque estate of The Hirsel is set to the west of the town and was once home to former Prime Minister, Alec Douglas. The estate is now a great spot for bird watching and many species choose to nest there. The Scottish borders and the rest of Northumberland are all within easy driving distance, making this a great location for people looking to explore the wider area.
