The Heart of the Highlands
In the heart of the Highlands is the beautiful, quaint village of Glen Coe. This small town has a rich culture of arts and crafts and you can enjoy a lovely cup of tea and a cake in one of the many small cafes. Close to Glen Coe, there are a number of outdoor sports centres, such as a skiing centre. This region is full of some of the most recognised mountains and glens in Scotland – Buachille Etive Mor is a beautiful peak which is known to be the most photographed mountain in Scotland.
Heading further North...
Far North, you will find the astounding Dunnobin Castle which looks almost like a fairy tale palace with its towering conical spires. The epic terrain of this region is dotted with breathtaking mountains, gloriously calm lochs and stunning waterfalls. The far North is a great place to see myriad wildlife – view whales and dolphins from clifftops, or just relax on the beautiful sandy beaches this area has to offer. The Northernmost part of mainland Scotland is also a great place for family activities, with its vast array of Nature Reserves and opportunities for salmon fishing, mountain biking, golf and wonderful Wildlife Cruises from John O’Groats or Wick Harbour.
Stunning Skye and Lovely Lochalsh
Skye and Lochalsh is a beautiful region of Scotland in which to enjoy your luxury break. The enchanting Isle of Skye can be reached either by the Skye Bridge from the Kyle of Lochalsh, or by ferry over from Mallaig. When you arrive on the island, you will find a rich Gaelic culture with traditional music, and you will also be unable to miss the stunning, start and unforgiving peaks of the Cuillin mountain range. Don’t overlook Trotternish Peninsula, with its awe-inspiring rock formations and pinnacles such as the legendary Old Man of Storr, or the beautiful lighthouse over at Neist Point. This wild land is also home to one of Scotland’s finest castles, Dunvegan – but first, don’t miss the beautiful Eilean Donan Castle on the mainland near the bridge.
Unmissable attractions in and around the Highlands:
• A relatively easy scramble taking just an hour or two up to the Lost Valley (Coire Gabhail) opens up into stunning scenery – the valley is where the MacDonalds of Glen Coe hid their cattle.
• Skye’s Fairy Pools are an otherworldly experience. Tens of beautiful, enclosed clear-water pools beneath tiers upon tiers of waterfalls where you can go for an (albeit very cold) dip in the gloriously dominating surroundings of the huge Cuillin mountains.
• Try your hand at spotting Nessie, the famous monster of Loch Ness at Inverness.
In this region you can expect to stay in wild retreats; log cabins surrounded by miles and miles of wild moorland, unusual conversions such as watermills and huge country cottages within estates.
