Thinking of taking a luxury cottage break in the North Yorkshire Moors? The North York Moors National Park lies on the east coast of Yorkshire; the higher ground a wide expanse of purple heather and bracken criss-crossed by tiny streams and rivulets, the valleys farms and fields separated by stone walls.
Now the preserve of walkers, the North York Moors developed accidentally. Much of Britain was forested at one time and as people cleared the trees for farming and for making charcoal to fire iron-smelting furnaces, the land became denuded and poor; a place where only the hardiest of shrubs and plants could survive. The North Yorkshire Moors is now excellent walking and hiking country. Staying in a comfortable luxury cottage can be important after a days walking.
People visit to see the waterfalls such as Falling Foss and the various weathered natural sculptures and standing stones. Anyone with an interest in history will come across numerous stories of life through the ages in East Yorkshire. The cliffs of Robin Hood’s Bay are rich in fossils and another interesting place to visit whilst on a cottage holiday. In fact it is quite difficult to decide where to begin a journey through the Yorkshire Moors because of the large number of fascinating places to explore. The villages around the moors offer hospitality, tea and scones, and the usual gift shops, pubs and tourist information. If you would like a real challenge, The Cleveland Way is a 100 mile walk from Helmsley to Filey.
