The word ‘burren’ comes from the irish word ‘Boíreann’ which means ‘rocky place’, this is hugely relevant in the Burren National Park because it has very little soil coverage. However Limestone which covers a lot of the area, has been referred to as a very fertile rock because it holds a mixture of nutrients and floral species making the Burren National park a unusual place to visit.
