Newent

From award-winning butchers to local farmers markets, this medieval market town offers a great range of locally sourced produce that is hard to match. Located on the Northern edge of the stunning Forest of Dean and 8 miles from Gloucester City, Newent and the surrounding areas offer up many special places to visit that have made it a great destination choice, and what better way to enjoy the town then with a stay in some of Cottage Gems luxury self-catering accommodation in the area.
Places to Visit

  • Found deep within the Forest of Dean, the breath-taking Wye Valley AONB is a must. This protected area is filled with ancient ruins, woodland, rivers and meadows that make it a special place to visit. Recognised for its perfect balance between dramatic and peaceful landscapes, the area is great for walking, cycling and even canoeing and offers options for both shorter and longer trails. Rich with history, the area once marked a disputed border and as such signs of war, including a number of castles, still grace the area.
  • With over 350 birds of prey on offer, the National Birds of Prey Centre is an extremely popular attraction. It is hard to find a similar substitute for this special place, which offers visitors the chance to see Hawks, Eagles, Vultures and a range of other impressive birds up close.
  • Golden Post Box – one of twenty-nine commemorative golden post boxes made to celebrate gold medal winning-efforts at the 2012 Olympics. A gold box can be found in the home town of each winner, with local athlete Charlotte Dujardin picking up Gold at the games for equestrian dressage.
  • The Market House is a grade II listed building with a lot of history and a striking structure. This timber frame, stone base and tiled roof building has been a fixture of Newent since the late 16th Century (restored in 1864).

Things to Do

  • Attend the internationally famed Onion Fayre hosted by the town every September. A must for those staying in the area around this time. More than 15,000 flood to Newent to attend the fayre.
  • Loss yourself in the magical setting of the Forest of Dean and spend the day cycling, walking or even horse-riding around this 30 mile stretch of woodland. 4 marked out Greenway routes link to local towns, eateries and attractions in a convenient and enjoyable way.

With such a wide and diverse of selection of attractions comes a wide and diverse selection of high-end accommodation for your self-catering holiday, making Newent a top destination choice. Take a look at what Cottage Gems has available below.
