This lovely rustic village is situated in a wonderfully tranquil location near to the Suffolk border and within the countryside of North Essex. Aside from a being located in a beautiful setting, Great Maplestead is also a great base from which to explore surrounding market towns like Halstead and Sudbury. Slightly further afield (all within a one hour drive) are popular destinations such as the historic university city of Cambridge and the charming town of Bury St Edmunds. With a population of just 360, and having being recognised as the runner up in the 2014 award for Best Kept Village in Essex, this village is full of character and is quiet unlike anywhere else. Places to Visit
- For nearly one thousand years Hedingham castle has stood in place over the local area. This impressive structure is full of history and wonder and remains an important historical landmark. - Looking for something to keep the kids entertained? Colchester Zoo is sure to do just that and will likely keep the whole family happy. Considered by some to be one of the best zoos in Europe, this zoo has over 250 species of animals set in 60 acres of land. The zoo is located just 12 miles from Great Maplestead.
- Come and see the birth place of Thomas Gainsborough in the nearby town of Sudbury. This 16th century house is a site to behold and also boasts a beautiful garden area.
