Wolsingham
This small market town is situated along the River Wear and is described as the gateway to Weardale by many locals. The area is full of stunning scenery and rich history; from ancient buildings to acres of countryside, Wolsingham is full of character and charm and is perfect for families or couples looking to escape the city for a weekend or longer. The town is right next to Weardale which makes it a great base for anyone interested in exploring the surrounding villages and attractions of Weardale or for those looking for a walking or hiking holiday in the English countryside.
Places to Visit
- The wonderful Hamsterly Forest was once an agricultural and shooting estate owned by the Surtees family. The land was purchased in 1927, since then extensive planting of the area has continued and has helped to create a forest covered in greenery and wildlife. The forest covers Bedburn, Euden and Spurlswood Becks and is full of pleasant walks. Spend some time enjoying the forests scenery and tranquillity with any of the excellent walking trails that are available to visitors. Cycling routes, and horse riding paths, are also available.
- Hall Hill Farm is an excellent family-friendly attraction which has proven a favourite amongst children. This award winning farm is set on 290 hectares of land in the countryside of Country Durham and is brimming with things to see and do. From lamb feeding and rabbit handling to tractor riding and donkey riding, there is an excellent range of activities for kids to enjoy.
- For a thousand years historic Auckland Castle has stood in place. Auckland Castle is full of history and ore and tells the fascinating tale of the Bishop of Durham (England’s only prince-bishop). The castle is full of displays and exhibitions examining its rich history in detail. The gardens and deer park that surround the castle are also full of splendour and things to see (such as tranquil fish ponds and an 18th century Deer House).
