This is the lovely Dons Barn.
Part of the old Grove Farm it was originally the Winnowing Barn and dates back to the 1700s Downstairs you can relax in the massive Kilim covered Knoll sofa enjoying the many original features of this stylish and very cosy cottage, features like the original Suffolk brick floor and the old millstones that are now used as the table and the hearth for the roaring log burning stove. Upstairs the roof is open to the beams and there are lovely views over the orchard into the sunset through the oak and glass wall which covers this side of the barn. This is the ideal place to come to and unwind because it is so gorgeous and cosy, once inside you won't want to go out but if you do there are lovely walks all around and a rash of wonderful pubs and restaurants. The cycle route passes by the cottage and we supply bikes for free and you can even hire a canoe from us to explore the beautiful river Stour where Constable painted 'The Haywain'; probably England's most famous landscape painting.
Dons Barn has all the optional extras you would expect from a 4 star cottage, please visit our home website for masses of more pictures, prices, online availability and booking and a wealth of local information.
Surrounded by lovely Suffolk countryside, just 2 hours from London, our 6 very cosy cottages actually make up the old Grove Farm which is close to Lavenham; famous for being the best preserved medieval village in England. We are ideally situated for exploring the pretty villages of Suffolk and its coastline, or visiting London which is 50 minutes by train from the nearest mainline station. Despite being so close to London this area is very rural and until very recently rather inaccessible, this has helped preserve the lovely rural qualities and the tiny villages and hamlets that spread out across a spiders web of barely chartered byroads and country lanes. These beautiful villages are one of the great attractions for visitors to Suffolk, often beautifully preserved in all their Medieval splendour and many containing a rich history of the early pilgrims to America, in this tiny hamlet of Edwardstone the first Governor of Massachusetts set off to America.
The Grove Cottages, which were formerly dairies, bakery and two farm workers cottages are built in a Monastic style 'double quadrangle', the buildings all date back to the early 17 hundreds, when they serviced a long lost Mansion House. All cottages are all totally self contained and very private, having entrances from totally different sides; they sleep from 2 to 6 people. All the cottages are fully equipped with farm house style kitchens. The comfortable bathrooms all feature modern double sized showers and all the beds have good orthopedic mattresses, feather duvets and only pure linen and finest cotton. Each cottage has a TV & DVD player as well as a Hi-Fi and CD system with a large selection of tapes, CD's and books. We provide a 'Welcome Pack' with all the ingredients for a proper English breakfast: fresh locally produced organic eggs, locally famous Granary pat bread, butter, bacon, tomatoes, olive oil, fresh herbs, milk, real coffee and tea and the usual basics.
To fill up your spare time we supply many maps and guides for walking, cycling the Suffolk cycle routes or touring the area. We have also made up a special folder with all the insider tips for discovering this lovely area and a list of all the best pubs, restaurants, antique fairs, trips to the sea side and places to visit. For guests who like to enjoy the countryside, walk, cycle, ride horses, discover pretty villages, shoot, play golf, canoe, eat in great restaurants, drink in great pubs or just relax in style, this is the place. Bikes are provided free and canoes are available to explore the River Stour, which meanders through countryside that the great English landscape artist John Constable made famous. The mature Orchard gardens lead directly onto the fields and guests are welcome to use the BBQ's that we provide. Short breaks and weekend getaways are welcome all year. Pets are Welcome. The cottages have a 4 Star English Tourism Council Rating. Visit our fast home website at www.grove-cottages.co.uk using the link below, for full details, prices and online availability.
