If you’ve been inspired watching the top golfers in action at The Open this week you may be considering booking a holiday where you can relax in comfort while honing your own driving and putting skils.
There are some absolutely wonderful luxury cottages and self-catering accommodation with golf nearby throughout the UK.
You might want to take your golfing break with a large party of friends, there might be just the two of you or perhaps you fancy going solo. Whatever your plans there will be an appropriate property and many of them will allow you to take the dogs as well.
There are holiday homes close to some of Scotland’s greatest golf courses, such as St Andrews, Carnoustie or Royal Troon, the former Ryder Cup venue in Wales – Celtic Manor – and the scenic venues in England, like Royal St George’s, Royal Birkdale and Wentworth.
Here are some potential self-catering golfing holiday properties to whet your appetite:
Lazy Day Luxury Lodges, Borders, Scotland
You have a choice here of two luxurious five-star log cabins, located at Berwick-upon-Tweed, just an hour’s drive from the venue for this year’s British Open, Muirfield, one of the world’s oldest courses.
Up to four people can be accommodated in two bedrooms and guests will enjoy a huge front garden, a patio with a barbecue and views of lovely open countryside. To help you relax there is also a Finnish sauna. And if you want to take a break from playing golf, the historic city of Edinburgh is a short car journey away.
Woodpecker Luxury Cottage, Garstang, Lancashire
This beautiful property was built from the old stone buildings of an 18th century farmhouse and it is sited in an idyllic spot inside a seven-acre field. Guests at this luxury cottage in Lancashire will be stunned by the views across to the coast on one side and the Lake District on the other. Up to a dozen people can stay there in six bedrooms, five of them being en suite. The added benefit for golfers is that the picturesque Royal Lytham and St Anne’s Golf Club, which has hosted 10 Open Championships and two Ryder Cups, is nearby. You will also be close to the seaside town of Blackpool, where you can laze on the beach or spend an evening touring the promenade attractions.
Orchard Barn, Newnham-on-Severn, Gloucestershire
If you are looking for a luxury holiday home in the Forest of Dean which is close to a golf course, then this is the place for you. It’s a grade II listed detached stone barn set within its own six-acre meadow, with three bedrooms easily able to host six adults and a child. One of its striking features is the comfy sitting room with vaulted oak-beam ceiling and, if you are staying in the winter, there is the bonus of underfloor heating. Nearby is the attractive Celtic Manor Resort, venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup, which boasts three championship golf courses. There is also the opportunity to explore the Cotswolds.
